Back in January of 2012 I set out to deepen my understanding of the yoga sutras of Patanjali (one of the seminal texts of the yoga tradition) …
With my yoga teacher training coming to an end, I was excited with the idea of continuing to study yoga in ways that complemented my time on the mat and cushion.
My plan was to read a sutra in the morning from each of the commentaries I owned at the time, transcribe the translations in a journal, along with my thoughts after reflecting on the topic during the day…
I figured that with 196 sutras, I could study one per day and be done in less than a year with plenty of time for days off…
Life being what it is, I completed this little study project two years and two days later!
What it has taught me more than anything, is that this sacred text which was written over 1500 years ago offers enough wisdom, priceless information and practical instructions to keep learning from, over a lifetime and more!
So needless to say, I am beyond excited to have been offered the opportunity to facilitate a yoga sutras study group at Lilananda starting this fall!
I believe that many of us have a strong desire to dive deeper into our study of yoga because we have already been lucky enough to experience many of its benefits on and off the mat; and we realize that no matter where we are on our own path of life, there is always so much more left to explore!
But although we certainly have plenty of resources at our disposal to do such exploration on our own, our odds of succeeding are usually much improved when some form of commitment and accountability is involved…And that’s what I hope the study group will provide for us.
You know; it’s like having a workout buddy to help you stay fit or taking music lessons to remain motivated with practice… The kind of commitment and accountability that feels empowering, sustaining, and even fun!
