Vanessa has been practicing yoga since 2003 and teaching since 2008. She started using a Rodney Yee video after her eldest child was born as a way to lose weight. It worked and she was intrigued by the details in the relaxation portion. She began to be aware of things she had never thought of before or had actively pushed away.
Her first public yoga class was done in jeans because a “workshop” meant something else for someone who had never been to a yoga studio. It was a bandha workshop with Lauren Toolin at Heartspace Albany. She was told after by another student that the Y might be a better fit for her while she was looking at the studio schedule, so she committed to a 12 week yoga series with the then owner of the studio. Practicing in a studio with a live teacher was relevatory. She decided to take the 200hr Yoga Teacher Empowerment Program the owner was offering. When he fell ill midway through the training, Lauren Toolin stepped in to complete the program.
Vanessa has a bachelor’s degree in Holistic Health, she has taken Yoga Vidya’s 300 hour Advanced Yoga Teacher Training twice. She has been offering yoga classes in the Capital District for 10 years. She has also developed and grown a business which supports the growth of wellness professionals across the country. She is currently raising three people, helping to manage Lilananda Yoga, and working from home at VMC Support Services.
She welcomes the opportunity to share these teachings one on one.
I started yoga in 2004. It had interested me for a while and I finally took my first class at the age of 24. I completed my 200hr and 300hr trainings in 2012 and 2016 respectively, and I’ve been teaching for the past 6 years. Now as I approach the big 40 I am beyond grateful for my practice and for the family/community that I have come to know because of my journey so far with Yoga.
I, like so many had a humble beginning in life riddled with challenges and experiences that definitely impacted the woman I was becoming. I went into the military (NAVY) right out of high school, I trained and worked as a Hospital Corpsmen until I got out in 2001. After working in the medical realm for all that time I was interested in healthy living and alternative options to traditional medicine. A few years later I finally tried Yoga. I practiced yoga for about 6.5 years before I stepped foot into an actual studio with a solid teacher (Lauren Toolin). In that class I almost felt like I had never really done Yoga and after that class I knew I needed more of it in my life. I decided then that I wanted to take the 200HR teacher training.
Those 9 months for me were intense. I approached the training and the practices with interest and determination. I can wholeheartedly say that being dedicated to my practice and learning about the teachings of Yoga has helped me heal old hurts and helped me to change my unhealthy patterns. The road wasn’t easy, but I was totally supported by my practice, my family, my teacher, and the Sangha(yoga family) that I had become a part of. Integrating the practices into my life has helped me grow and move through my days with more ease and joy. This experience of healing and growth motivates me every day. I am so thankful for Yoga and I am passionate about sharing it with whomever is willing to try.
